Choose Your Mood: The Power of Your Internal Dialogue by Lynette Lovelace, Lifetherapy
By Lynette Lovelace, Lifetherapy
You know that little voice inside your head? I have heard it called internal dialogue, the inside chatterbox, the devil or angel on your shoulder and the monkey on your back. What we say to ourselves inside our own minds is a great predictor of happiness and success.
If our inner dialogue is loving and encouraging, as in âyou can do thisâ and âI believe in youâ we see people try, grow, and learn in ways other people canât even imagine. If our inner dialogue is dire and dark, as in âyou canât do thisâ or âyouâre never going to get itâ we stop trying. Negativity is insidious, what should be a light burning inside of us is easily stifled. All of you Mamas out there know you would not tolerate the school bully filling up your childâs head with such.  Why would you subject yourself to it?
Learning to listen to your internal dialogue is as simple as taking a piece of paper and jotting down what you are saying to yourself. If you find you are unkind to yourself it is time to make some changes. Switch that station! We are most often our own worst critics and enemies. If we donât manage our own thoughts and feelings, we are diminishing ourselves from being our true best. You deserve that, you deserve the kindness of self that you would offer up so lavishly onto a dear friend. Be gentle and good to yourself, monitor the chatter and only subscribe to that which serves you.
